Duramax: Top 10 Problems & Fixes

GM's Duramax paired with the Allison transmission is a rugged combination, but each generation has its known weak points — from LB7 injectors to the LML's CP4 pump. Address them and these trucks are workhorses.

The 10 most common failures

What goes wrong on the Duramax — and how we fix it

Ranked from the problems we see most. Every one has a real, root-cause fix — not a band-aid.

01

LB7 injector failure

Hard start, knock, white smoke, and fuel in the oil on '01–'04 trucks.

The fixReplace the injectors (under the valve covers) with updated units.
02

CP4.2 fuel pump failure (LML)

No-start with metal contamination throughout the fuel system on '11–'16 trucks.

The fixCP4 bypass kit or CP3 conversion to protect and replace the pump.
03

Water pump failure

Coolant weep and overheating from a worn water pump — a common Duramax wear item.

The fixReplace the water pump and refresh the thermostats and coolant.
04

Fuel filter housing & lift pump leaks

Hard start and air in the fuel from a leaking factory filter head.

The fixRebuild or replace the filter housing and add an aftermarket lift pump.
05

Allison limp / TCC shudder

Harsh shifts, slipping, or limp mode under load as the trans or TCC wears.

The fixService or build the Allison and add a tune to firm up shifts.
06

Injector harness chafe

Cylinder cut-out and codes as the valley harness rubs through its insulation.

The fixRepair and re-route the injector harness away from contact points.
07

Glow plug & controller failure

Hard cold starts and rough warm-up; some plugs can swell and damage heads.

The fixReplace failed glow plugs and the controller with correct-spec parts.
08

EGR / DPF clogging (LMM/LML)

Frequent regens, derate, and poor economy on emissions-era trucks.

The fixClean/service the emissions system or delete with tuning (off-road).
09

Head gasket lift on high-HP builds

Coolant loss and overheating once power outpaces the factory head bolts.

The fixInstall head studs and gaskets to hold cylinder pressure.
10

Overheating while towing

Climbing temps on grades from an aging cooling system and tired fan clutch.

The fixRefresh the radiator, fan clutch, and coolant; add gauges to monitor.
